A squeaky floor is almost always movement between wood and a fastener or subfloor. Fixing it means stopping that movement, either from underneath the floor or straight through the finished surface.
If you can reach the floor from below, drive a shim or a trim screw between the joist and subfloor. From above, use a squeak-relief screw kit that snaps off below the surface, then fill the hole. On hardwood, a little talc or graphite in the gap often silences light squeaks.
Why floors squeak
Wood expands and contracts with humidity. As it moves, boards rub against nails, screws, or each other. A loose nail that has lost its grip lets the subfloor flex, and that flex is what you hear. Fix the movement and the noise goes with it.
Find the exact spot
- Walk the floor slowly in socks and listen as you shift weight.
- Mark each spot with removable tape.
- If you have access below, have someone stand on the squeak upstairs while you look for movement from underneath.
Fix from below (best if you have access)
- Locate the joistFind the ceiling joist nearest the squeak. A stud finder helps.
- Add a shimSlide a thin wooden shim into the gap between joist and subfloor, then snap off the excess.
- Or screw it tightDrive a trim-head screw at a slight angle through the subfloor into the joist to pull the two together.

Before driving any screw through a floor, check for pipes, wiring, and heating ducts. Sinking a screw into a water line is far more expensive than the squeak.
On engineered or laminate floors, avoid screws from above — they can crack the wear layer. Use a lubricating powder in the joints, or correct the subfloor from below.

For light squeaks between hardwood boards, yes. Talc or graphite powder lubricates the rubbing surfaces. It is a temporary fix that may need repeating, but it is harmless and quick.
Can I fix squeaks under carpet?
Yes. Squeak-relief screws can be driven straight through carpet and pad. The head snaps off below the pile, so nothing is visible.
